Rozhenitza’s Reindeer Cookies
(In honor of our first Yule issue, we are sharing with our readers, a very old, secret CUUPS recipe for Reindeer Cookies. It’s been around since at least last
year.)
- 1 Reindeer cookie cutter
- 1 or more rolls of refrigerated gingerbread dough from the dairy case
- 1 can white frosting
- Red-hot candies (optional)
Take refrigerated dough and roll out according to directions on the package. Cut with reindeer cookie cutter. Bake according to directions on the package. Frost with frosting. For a more “modern” touch, use a red-hot candy for the nose.
Ice Candles
Remember when you were a kid at camp and made ice candles? Or maybe you didn’t. Well, it’s fun, easy, and pretty. As long as you understand the basics of handling melting wax safely, you can make beautiful candles.
- A mold of some sort - yes, you can even use a cardboard milk container -
- A relatively high melt point wax - a pillar blend, or a hurricane blend - such as IGI 1014
- A candle to use as the “core” - for a milk carton use a standard taper
- Color and/or fragrance as desired
- Ice, chopped into small pieces/chunks
- A basic understanding of Candle Making Safety
Melt wax in a double boiler, never on direct heat.Never leave melting wax unattended. Have a fire extinguisher available, and/or a heavy lid to smother a fire. If possible, melt in a pot with a pouring spout. Mix in your color or fragrance. Put taper in the middle of the milk carton, pack ice around it to hold it. Pour melted wax over ice in milk carton. Let cool for an hour or so before unmolding and draining the water out of the candle.
Enjoy your candle. Be sure to burn it on a plate or something to catch the wax that will melt through the holes in the candle.
